Summary
The Outrigger Reef Waikiki Beach Resort has underwent renovations to multiple sections to their hotel. Particularly, the creation of the A’o Cultural Center. The Polynesian Voyaging Society (PVS) had given parts of the original 23A sail, the sail that was used in the Mālama Honua Worldwide Voyage, to Outrigger to display in their new center. It was decided that the sails would be cut and mounted onto a recreation of the Hōkūleʻa. Then, using projection mapping, the wa’a would “sail” to the different stops of the original worldwide voyage.

The Waʻa

The completed recreation. It was mounted to face the ocean, as just outside the cultural center is an exit that leads to the beach. The streaks and faded color of the sails shows just how much use these sails got during the voyage.
The Projection
The projection is a looping video that cycles through the stops of the worldwide voyage and showcases the star compass used in modern Hawaiian wayfinding.
